What is a blog?

A blog is short for weblog or a personal journal that is published on the Internet.  Blogs usually reflect the author's personal thoughts and opinions on various topics selected by the author.  Blogs allow participants to discuss the author's postings instantly.  Blogging software allows the author to determine how participants may interact within his/her blog.  The author can require that items be approved before being posted to his/her site or monitor postings as they occur - with th ability to remove any inappropriate postings.  The author may also password protect his/her site so that only invited users are allowed to post to the site.

The author receives an email (to the address provided during blog registration) with items posted by participants - allowing the author to moderate or control the content of their site.  The author can also provide interesting links and upload documents and pictures to his/her blog site.

You can use blogs to get your students involved in real discussion/communication regarding a topic in your curriculum.  It gives students a different forum for expressing their ideas and opinions about various topics covered in your class.  You can also have students set up their own blog site to discuss different topics.  Click here to see examples of weblogs used by classroom teachers or descriptions of how to get started using weblogs.
