Philosophy
The LMC provides materials to promote the love of reading and to support the curriculum.  We provide resources for students and faculty in the form of print, non-print and electronic materials.   We hope that our students will become lovers of reading, independent library users, informed users of information, and life-long learners.

LMC Schedule
Each class will visit the library other week to check out books. There is an "Open" library time daily from 8:30am - 2:30pm.

How to Select a Good Book

1.  Check the cover.  Does the cover catch your eye?  Don't judge a book by its cover.

2.Read the inside flap summary.  Does the book sound like something you would enjoy?

3.  Look at the illustrations and the text.  Do the words and pictures make an interesting combination?

4.  Try the obvious.  Look at the return cart and check the books that are waiting to be shelved.  You'll find some good choices here.

5.  Ask Mrs. Smallwood who knows hundreds of great books and would be glad to make suggestions.

6.  Look at what your friends are reading.

7.  Think about books that your teachers may have    shared.  Would you like to reread a favorite?

8.  Read other books written by your favorite authors.

9.  Read about your hobbies or other special interests.

10.  Read variations of your favorite folk and fairy tales.

Keep Your Books Happy

1.  Keep books away from food and beverages. Water damages books!  Please have snacks before or after reading your library books and keep away from areas where food is served.
2.  Keep books away from younger brothers and sisters who might scribble in or tear the books.
3.  Keep books away from pets.
4. Turn pages carefully from the top corner.
5.  Make sure hands are clean when reading library books.
6.  Protect the spine of the book by always using a bookmark rather than placing face down on the open pages.
7.   Designate one particular "safe spot" to store library books and return books there after each reading.

Damaged and Lost Books
Accidents do happen.  Puppies chew (usually new) books, water bottles leak in backpacks, younger siblings use them for creative art projects, and books get left on the playground the day it rains or they just fly off on a little vacation.  Most children are responsible and if a book becomes accidentally damaged, we stress the responsibility to report and, if necessary to replace a book that gets damaged while in their care.
If a book page accidentally rips, please do not attempt to repair it at home. We use special book tapes and glue, which resist heat and won't discolor.  Return the book with a note and we will gladly try and repair it.
If a book becomes damaged beyond use, you will be billed for the replacement cost.  You may replace the book, provided it is the same type.  Please check with us before replacing a hardback edition, most of our books are library editions, meant to take heavy use, and not the trade editions sold in bookstores.
If major damage occurs, please return the book with a note/phone call/ email , so that your child may continue to borrow books.  As long as we are aware that you know the book is damaged and will need to be replaced, your child may continue to borrow books. If your child returns a book damaged beyond use and you are not aware of the obligation, borrowing privileges are withheld until you are notified.
